THEA REEVES AND THE TEAR OF THE MORNING STAR
by Dmitriy Kushnir

Thea Reeves is an ordinary girl, from an ordinary family with financial troubles, living in a small town of Johnston. After she starts an after school job at The Magic Shop in order to help herself financially, her life becomes more extraordinary with every day.

EXCERPT
The rest of the day went by rather smoothly. Just after five o\’clock, people from all walks of life began to pour into The Magic Shop. Some were buying, but surprisingly, many were there for the coffee and to read books. To Thea, Jamie explained that most of their customers are business oriented individuals, who find magic as a way to unwind after a long stressful day at work. They come in, read, usually never buy books, but on occasion buy a souvenir or two for friends and family, and almost always leave good tips.

What Thea found fascinating is that no one tried to steal anything all day, and everyone was polite and courteous. Jamie did not know how to explain that, but she told Thea that there is a magic spell on The Magic Shop, where people leave all of their anger, worries and problems at the door, and those who can\’t … never come inside.

It felt strange, but Thea also felt that on her first day at The Magic Shop, she did not once think about her chores, problems at home, or money difficulties her parents have. The entire time she was just happy to be at The Magic Shop.

What was really exciting is that at the end of the day, Thea found herself holding thirty five dollars in tips from coffee drinking and book reading patrons. If every day would be like this, that dream car would become a reality by the time Thea would receive her driver\’s license.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DMITRIY
-What inspired you to become a writer?

It was the whole: glass half full/glass half empty concept. At certain moment in my life I realized that my glass was not full, but overflowing, and if I wouldn\’t find a way to share everything I have learned to that point, I\’d probably go insane. Writing was the best way for me to share the knowledge and wisdom I have accumulated over the years with others.

-If you could visit your book’s world for a day, what one thing would you do?

I\’d just hang out with the characters from the book without letting them know who I really am. Although I am not ignoring the possibility that some of the characters would be able to read my mind and learn of my true identity. At least such is the way I\’ve designed the book: there are truly no secrets and eventually all lies will come into the light.

-It’s two in the morning. What does your protagonist reveal in confidence? (Don’t worry, we won’t tell.)

My protagonist would say that one should really never trust anybody who he or she is not related to by blood, no matter how attached or trustworthy that individual may be. Since at three in the morning, on any given day, a betrayal may take place, lives may be destroyed and lovers may be disappointed.

-Which of your characters would you go out for drinks with?

I don\’t drink, and neither does the character I\’d really like to spend some time with. Let\’s just say that I like to learn new wisdom, no matter the source, and in this case the character I am thinking of is full of wisdom and has centuries of knowledge to share.

-You’re in a tavern, and a dwarf challenges you to a duel. What do you do?

Offer him a pint of mead instead. Dwarves tend to act first and think second. But no dwarf will ever turn down a pint of mead. The time it takes him to drink that pint should be long enough for that dwarf to think over if he really wants to duel me or not.

-Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?

Porn, I could never write porn. It is the genre I am truly against and think that it destroys the minds of youth.
