Do you remember the old days of the internet? Back before everything had to be about selling something and when people posted on sites like Livejournal just for the heck of it?
I’m showing my age, but I don’t care. Truth be told, I miss those days a little.
Okay, more than a little.
So when it recently dawned on me that I have a website and, thus, a blog that I can run however I want, the little lightbulb in my head went on.
💡
The world feels very uncertain right now.
(Understatement, I know.)
I can’t change the uncertainty. But I can use my voice to tell stories I want to tell. I can use this space to cultivate some humanity on the internet and maybe even form a community of readers who are just looking for something to read that isn’t going to end with “and if you liked this, buy my product.”
Humanity, community, story.
There are my three reasons. I like them. I like them so much I made them my site’s new tagline. These are things I believe in, things I want to see more of. This blog is me doing my part to be the change I want to see.
Now, all that said, I’m still a writer and a small business owner. I will likely mention those things because they are part of my life. This does not mean I expect anyone to rush and buy something. If you want to support me by doing so, thank you, but it’s in no way required.
This also does not mean I will be writing the blog of kittens and unicorns. Humanity is messy. Community isn’t perfect. Stories are sometimes dark. I’m not here to be doom and gloom—not at all. But I’m not here to just be perky all the time. I don’t think I could be perky all the time if my life depended on it.
😖
(Aww, look at that face…)
So, we’ve covered what you aren’t getting.
Now, let’s talk about what you will get from this blog.
You’ll get a girl on the internet who decided she wanted to talk about stuff she likes without having to optimize it for SEO or come up with a CTA. I can do those things. I’m choosing not to here.
Obviously, this won’t be Livejournal, but I’m hoping to hit that “just posting because I can” feel. Expect a few hundred words once a week on whatever topic strikes my fancy—books, movies, my D&D games, my current writing project (or lack thereof), something I’m excited about, something that ticked me off, etc.
Basically, expect a human…raised by humans. (Okay, I couldn’t help it. That’s the best line in Elf.)
Right, this is already longer than I wanted, so I’ll leave it here. See you next week.
And if you’d like to make sure you get your weekly dose of humanity, you can sign up to get emails when I publish new posts.
👋 Fair travels,
Mary
