The Kit ‘n Kabookle Blog: Dare to Think Differently About Story

Open book with pages fluttering upward like the wings of a bird, creating a sense of story taking flight.

Hey, Mary here, and welcome to the blog. If you’ve come in search of content to get you thinking about every aspect of storytelling, congrats–you’re in the right place. I typically post something short but story-related every Tuesday, plus longer deep-dives on Thursday as I produce them. If you have thoughts, don’t hesitate to leave a comment, and make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss the post that could change your entire outlook on writing. (BTW, if you go back a bit into 2026, you’ll likely see some stuff that’s a bit outdated in terms of what my site says. Don’t mind that–it’s been a year of discovery, let me tell you.)

Oh, and because I believe in attributing artists wherever possible, credit to Michaela 💗 from Pixabay for the image.

  • Different Does Not Mean Unrelatable
Shortly after the #WeNeedDiverseBooks movement got going in 2014, I felt stumped. Granted, I was very new to the book world then, but I was also someone who’d been reading avidly for two decades and never noticed an issue with the books I read. In addition, being someone with vision…
  • Presenting: Immersive Storytelling in Action
If you navigate to any of the main pages of my site (listed above in a neat menu for your convenience), you’ll find it’s no secret my angle on fiction. I combine my MFA with table-top role-playing games to help authors create immersive stories that keep readers coming back. Of…
  • When Cliffhangers Work (And When They’re Just Annoying)
I first heard the Wicked Original Broadway Cast recording in 2024, and within the first few seconds of “Loathing,” I was hooked. It became my favorite musical and has stayed so until today. When I learned Wicked was coming to the big screen, I was torn. I didn’t want a…
  • Sometimes, You Even Forget Good Stories
Given my entire editorial vibe is “let’s make your story unforgettable,” this probably seems like a blog post that will work against me. After all, isn’t the whole purpose to remember good stories? Short answer: Yes. However, human brains don’t always adhere to best practices. (I feel like that sentence…
  • 4 Techniques to Keep Readers Turning Pages of a Multi-Pov Novel
Turning a page is such a small, simple action. And yet, getting readers to continuously do it several hundred times can be a herculean task. Of course, the turning of pages can be metaphoric, and feel free to substitute any image you want for reading audio books or ebooks. Still,…
  • What Makes a Story Itself?
I got into a discussion this week with a friend about movie remakes. There are so many ways I could go with this. Like, for example, that I love to read fairy-tale retelling books but always kind of roll my eyes when it’s announced a studio will make a remake…
  • The Most Fulfilling Kind of Exhaustion
Psst! Notice anything different? If not, that’s okay, I won’t keep you in suspense (especially if you’re reading this in an email and wouldn’t notice anyway). But if you happen to be on an actual computer (not a phone), you might notice the font is a smidge bigger. This is…
  • Writing a Book with Multiple POVs Part 2: Story
Picture it: Holiday, year of choice. Fifteen people sit around a table, three of whom decide they will tell the story of an event they all recently attended. As they do, the other twelve sit and listen as the first storyteller starts, the second one interrupts to say the first…
