The Most Fulfilling Kind of Exhaustion

Psst! Notice anything different?

If not, that’s okay, I won’t keep you in suspense (especially if you’re reading this in an email and wouldn’t notice anyway).

But if you happen to be on an actual computer (not a phone), you might notice the font is a smidge bigger. This is one in a long, long, long (long) list of things I’ve changed about the site this weekend.

Other things include almost the entire contents of my contact, services, and about pages. The homepage is coming soon.

And I am freaking exhausted.

But feeling so accomplished.

Heck, if you are reading this by email, you should also notice changes there too. Specifically, a nice header image and  stuff.

I’ve been busy.

Did I mention exhausted?

Again, though, I’m okay with this exhaustion because it comes with putting real, honest effort into something I have avoided like the plague for years: Making my website actually reflect who I am as a person and professional.

I can copywrite when called upon, but I will admit, it is far, far, far from my honed skillset. So much so that I thought to myself over the last 72 hours “why is it that I can, and have, put down over 3000 words of fiction in a day but writing 300 words for my about page feels like pulling out my hair one strand at a time?” This weekend, I finally said I was figuring out a better way to do this and scoured the internet for people who know how to write marketing copy.

I dislike the idea of reducing myself to a marketable commodity. I just want to be the girl who does the thing and helps people with their fiction. And I am, sure, but the thing I need to stop doing is trying to be that girl to everyone. I have my method, my specialty genres, and my unique background. That’s not going to be for everyone, and that’s okay. Being generic isn’t doing me any favors. I’m a little out-there and a lot creative. Neither of those things means I have to sacrifice being a professional.

So if you’re so inclined, browse around (and don’t be surprised if you navigate back to the homepage and it’s suddenly wildly different). The site, like me, is a work in progress.

As to the exhaustion, I can take a nap if I need to.

Oh, and btw, if you’ve been putting off doing something because “it’s just so much work,” believe you me, if I can redo my site’s major pages in a few days, you can do it—whatever it is.

And when you’re done, you’ll experience the most fulfilling kind of exhaustion. The kind where you can point to something and say “I did that.”

👋 Fair travels,

Mary

P.P.S. And a big thanks to Between The Lines Copywriting, the main source of my research this weekend.
