Welcome to the Author Discovery Project! This initiative started in April 2022 when it came to my attention that Amazon’s returns policy allowed readers to purchase an ebook, read the whole thing, and then return the book, meaning the author didn’t get paid. Since Amazon has a subscription service (Kindle Unlimited) that is made for this and since there are free institutions called libraries where books can be borrowed and returned at no damage to the author, this knowledge led me to start a new way to get authors noticed.

How this works: Each month, I buy one book, read it, chronicle my experience reading it, write a review, and post said review. If one book seems like it isn’t a lot, I know. It’s far less than I’d like to be doing, but I’m starting at one so I don’t bite off more than I can chew and drop the project. If and when my time and resources allow, I will consider upping the quantity. For now, one book chosen using the following criteria:

  • The author is new to me (meaning I have not read or performed any kind of paid work on their books before.)
  • I’m interested in the book.
  • The book is priced $5.00 or less.
  • The book has fewer than 100 reviews.

Since I’m putting more time toward reading and chronicling my reading experience with these books, the project lives on my Patreon. Patrons get early access to the Author Discovery posts and my as-I-read thoughts. At the end of each month, the posts open to the public, and I cross-post my final review to Amazon, Goodreads, and the Kit ‘N Kabookle blog.
